Evidence note: Product and pricing details were checked on 2 November 2026 against two official pages: the Octolens homepage and the Octolens pricing page. Plans and features change, so confirm them there before you buy. ShiftToAGI is not affiliated with Octolens, and this profile is not based on hands-on testing.

Octolens is a social listening tool. It collects public posts that match keywords you choose, such as your brand, competitors or category terms, from social networks, communities and review sites. It then uses AI to rate how relevant each post is before alerting your team (homepage).

A hypothetical situation

This story is fictional and illustrative. Priya runs a six-person company selling scheduling software to independent physiotherapy clinics. Her sales lead wants to find Reddit threads where clinic owners complain about no-shows and drop a product link into each one. Priya expects that would get the company removed from the very communities it needs to understand. Her other source of customer pain is the support inbox, which only hears from people who already bought. She wants outside evidence of problems without turning listening into unsolicited selling.

A tool like Octolens could cover the listening half. The rest of this profile explains what the vendor documents, where it could fit, and where human judgement has to stay in charge.

What does Octolens actually do?

Octolens runs your keywords across many public sources, gathers matches into one feed, and sends selected posts to tools your team already uses. The official pages describe five capabilities worth separating, because only one of them is really AI.

1. Broad source coverage from one keyword list

One keyword list applies to Reddit, X, LinkedIn, YouTube, TikTok, Bluesky, Hacker News, GitHub, Stack Overflow, DEV, and reviews on Trustpilot, the App Store and Google Play. The Scale plan adds podcasts, news, newsletters and the web (pricing). The FAQ also names Facebook and Instagram, but the plan comparison table does not, so confirm those if they matter to you.

2. AI relevance scoring, sentiment and tags

This is the AI feature. According to the vendor, its AI reads each post with your company context, rates relevance high, medium or low, adds sentiment, and applies tags such as feature request, bug report, buying intent or promotional. Alerts default to high and medium relevance (pricing). The vendor's FAQ says accuracy can vary by platform and mention volume, so treat scores as a sorting aid, not a verdict.

3. Alerts and routing

This is ordinary automation. Posts can go to Slack or email, with a choice of which relevance levels trigger an alert. Attio has a native integration, and webhooks and a REST API cover other destinations. The FAQ adds that Zapier, n8n or Make can route notifications (pricing, homepage).

4. MCP server for AI assistants

An MCP server lets compatible assistants, including Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor, answer plain-language questions about your mentions (homepage). Any summary is produced by the assistant you connect, so its quality depends on that assistant and your prompt, not only on Octolens.

5. History, search and reporting

A new keyword starts with the previous seven days of posts, and on-demand search reaches back 30 days (homepage). Every plan lists an analytics dashboard, share of voice against competitors, a sentiment breakdown, a daily brief email and CSV export (pricing). These are general platform features.

One boundary matters for the Reddit scenario. Octolens states that it finds public conversations but does not scrape profiles or build contact lists (homepage).

Who is Octolens for?

It suits businesses whose buyers talk in public online: software companies, consumer apps, developer tools, and B2B services with active subreddits or review pages. It is useful only if someone can read the alerts several times a week and has authority to act on what they learn.

It fits poorly for offline businesses whose customers rarely post publicly, or whose real conversations happen in closed groups and private channels a public listening tool cannot reach.

Practical applications by role

These are proposed uses built on the documented features. They are not vendor results.

A proposed workflow: Reddit problem discovery without promotion

This workflow is illustrative. It has not been run as a product test, and every output below is a synthetic fixture.

Fictional input: A clinic scheduling startup tracks five keywords: two category phrases ("physio no-shows", "clinic booking software"), two fictional competitor names ("BookWell", "ClinicFlow") and its own fictional brand ("Rebooky"). Five keywords sit inside the Pro plan's ten.

  1. Write the company context. The vendor says scoring uses your company context, but the pages do not show where or how it is entered, so treat that as a setup question for the trial. Use the brief below and leave out anything confidential.
  2. Set alerts. Send high-relevance alerts to a dedicated Slack channel kept away from sales channels, so nobody replies on reflex. Whether a private channel works was not documented in the sources reviewed.
  3. Read for 14 days without replying. One person logs each relevant Reddit post in a sheet: problem described, workaround mentioned, competitor named, link, date. Record no usernames; the link is enough to revisit context.
  4. Summarise weekly. Either export the week as CSV or ask an MCP-connected assistant to cluster posts by problem. Whether relevance filtering is available through MCP is not documented, so state the filter in your prompt and check the result. Sample synthetic output: "16 posts this week. Theme A, 9 posts: patients cancel by text after hours and staff miss it. Theme B, 4 posts: switching tools loses appointment history. 3 posts unclear, need human reading."
  5. Handle missing data honestly. A theme with fewer than three posts is marked "weak signal". Missing clinic size or region is recorded as "unknown", never guessed. If a summary line cites a post nobody can find, delete that line.
  6. Require human approval before any public reply. Replies are optional. If the team wants to answer a question, the founder approves the draft and checks the subreddit's self-promotion rules. The reply must answer the asker's question, disclose the affiliation, and include no link unless one is requested.
  7. Measure the pilot. Track the share of high-relevance alerts the reader agrees are relevant (aim for a clear majority), the number of themes with three or more posts, the number of themes that changed a product or messaging decision, and mention volume against the plan quota.
  8. Stop or adjust. Stop if most high-relevance alerts are still irrelevant after two rounds of keyword and context changes, if overage spend nears your cap, or if anyone posts unapproved promotion. Fix the company context first, then the keywords, then ask whether the tool fits at all.

Copyable company context and summary brief

COMPANY CONTEXT (for relevance scoring)
We sell [product] to [buyer type, e.g. independent clinics with 1-10 staff].
Relevant: posts where these buyers describe problems with [problem area],
compare tools in our category, or mention [competitor names].
Not relevant: patient health questions, job postings, unrelated uses of
our keywords, vendors promoting their own tools.

WEEKLY SUMMARY PROMPT (for an MCP-connected assistant)
Using only this week's high and medium relevance mentions:
1. Group posts by the problem described, not by platform.
2. For each group give a count, a one-line plain description,
and up to three post links.
3. Make the group counts add up to the total posts reviewed.
4. Do not include usernames or quote posts word for word.
5. List posts you could not classify separately.
6. Do not suggest replies or outreach.

What does Octolens cost, and what are the limits?

On 2 November 2026 the pricing cards showed dollar prices labelled "billed annually" (pricing):

Monthly-billing prices, EUR prices and taxes were not verified; check the official page. Mentions beyond the quota keep flowing and are charged per mention ($0.013 on Pro, $0.01 on Scale), and a monthly spend cap or an off switch is available in settings. The comparison table lists extra keywords at $10 each on Pro and $5 on Scale, without stating the billing interval there. The 7-day trial includes Pro features and up to 5,000 mentions, with no credit card required (pricing).

Other limits: the FAQ says there is no mobile app yet, the vendor says accuracy varies by platform, and only public posts are visible. Data history is listed as two years on Pro, while the homepage says data is kept from the day a keyword is added, so confirm retention if it matters (pricing, homepage).

Who should skip Octolens?

Skip it if your buyers do not talk publicly online, if nobody has time to read alerts and act on them, or if your real goal is a contact list for cold outreach. Also wait if an annual plan would strain your budget before you have proved the listening habit with manual searches on the forums your buyers use.

Frequently asked questions

Is it acceptable to reply to Reddit threads the tool surfaces?

Sometimes, but that is a community question, not a tool question. Each subreddit sets its own self-promotion rules. Read them, disclose who you work for, and answer the actual question. For problem discovery, not replying is usually the better default.

How should we handle privacy with mention data?

Keep only what the decision needs: the problem, the link and the date. Avoid copying usernames or personal details into spreadsheets, CRMs or AI prompts. If you connect an assistant, review that assistant's data handling as well.

Can a nontechnical team use it without code?

For the basics, the documentation suggests yes: Slack and email alerts, the dashboard and CSV export are listed features that need no code. Webhooks, the API and MCP matter if you want custom pipelines or assistant summaries.

Your next step

Before starting a trial, spend 30 minutes writing your company context and choosing five keywords, mostly problem phrases rather than your brand. Write down the result that would make you stop. Use the seven-day trial for the first week of the proposed 14-day pilot. Continue into week two only after explicitly approving the paid plan and its usage limits; otherwise end the pilot after seven days. Keep every public reply behind a named human approver.
